There was a power outage in the cities of Atwater, Grove City and Paynesville this morning at 6:15, but power was restored a little over two hours later. According to Tom Hane, media relations representative with Excel Energy in Minneapolis, heavy snow this morning (Monday) and branches fell on some lines causing the power outage. It affected 648 customers in the towns of Atwater, Grove city and Paynesville. The heavy snow took some branches down and the branches got caught in the lines and a lineman had to get to the location and clear the trees and branches from the line. 

Last night (Sunday), the Minnesota State Patrol was called to a head-on crash on Highway 29 four miles north of Glenwood in Pope County. A 2004 Ford pickup was traveling south on Highway 29 and a 2012 Chevy Equinox was travel north. The pickup driver lost control and collided with the Equinox and coming to rest in the northbound lane facing south. The driver of the Equinox went off the road into the ditch. Assisting at the scene were the Pope county and Douglas County Sheriff’s Offices and the Glenwood Police. The names of the four persons in the vehicles will be released later today.

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol were called to a rollover Saturday night on Highway 15 south of Hutchinson in McLeod County. 20 year old Ashley Geyen of Annandale was traveling north on Highway 15, lost control, left the roadway and rolled. She sustained minor injuries as did a passenger, 23 year old Petter Corrales of Monticello. A second passenger, two year old Natalie Corrales, was not injured.

25 year old Mohamedquadar Alinoor of Mankato suffered minor injuries when he lost control on the icy road, ran off the road and rolled. The rollover happened on Highway 19 in Redwood County. Assisting the Minnesota State Patrol were the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office and North Ambulance.

At 3:36 this morning (Monday), the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Alexandria Fire Department were called to a barn fire on County Road 7 Southwest near Holmes City. Upon arrival the structure was already burned to the ground. Nearby trees and a woodpile were also on fire. The barn housed about 11 chickens, all of which are believed to have perished in the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire was called in by Sandra Bessingpas.

The Minnesota State Patrol and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office were called to a rollover Saturday on Highway 23 north of Marshall. 22 year old Samantha Waldner of Coldwater, MI lost control of her vehicle, went into the ditch and rolled.

52 year old Timothy Keskey of Cokato was killed in a rollover Saturday at the intersection of Highway 27 and 733rd Street just east of Kingston. According to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, Keskey overcorrected after driving onto the shoulder of the roadway, crashed and rolled into the ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, 86 year old Melvin Keskey of Cokato, a passenger, was airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital in critical condition. The crash is under investigation by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office. The Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the crash.

Yesterday (Sunday) the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office was called to a rollover southeast of Wood Lake in Yellow Medicine County. A vehicle driven by 28 year old Briana Nething left the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop. She was transported by ambulance to a hospital. Her passenger, 28 year old Dean Nething was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted by North Memorial Air Care from the scene. The two were not wearing seatbelts, and according to the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office alcohol and excessive speed are believed to have been factors in the rollover. The case remains under investigation by the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office. Also assisting was the Echo Police Department.

Yesterday (Sunday) the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was called to a crash on Mullen Road and 73rd Avenue in St. Joseph Township. 27 year old Jared Slagter of Sartell was traveling west on Mullen Road, left the roadway and hit a utility pole. The pole was sheared at the base and the power lines were down across the roadway. Slagter was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital. The crash is under investigation by the sheriff’s office. Stearns Electric and Great River Energy out of Elk River were dispatched to the scene to address the damage.

Saturday the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was called to a snowmobile crash on County Road 10 in Albany township. 15 year old Adam Vowles of Albany and another youth were riding snowmobiles. The other youth stopped to wait for Vowles, who was behind him. Vowles was unable to stop and slid into the rear of the snowmobile, catching his leg between the two snowmobiles. There were injuries to his leg and he was taken by ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital. The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.

The Morris Area School Board will meet in regular session tonight (Monday) at seven in the Morris Senior Center. The agenda includes an update on technology in the district from Technology Director Stephen Lien. Superintendent Scott Monson will update the board on a possible consolidation between the Morris and Cyrus School Districts. The board will also review an updated budget for school year 2013-2014. The current budget shows a projected deficit of $266,556 for the coming year.
