Last week the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office received a call from an individual saying they’d received a call from a person claiming to be a worker in the Federal tax division in Washington D.C. This person told them they had won money from Publisher’s Clearing House but to get the money they had to pay $950. This person also told them the Chief Deputy would call to verify this was not a scam. About 20 minutes later a person called saying that were the chief deputy with the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office and it was okay to send the $950 and in turn they would receive the $600,000. The complainant then called the sheriff’s office and verified the chief deputy did not call. Sheriff Dan Hartog says the sheriff’s office would not contact you to inform you that a specific organization is legitimate or not. This is just a new twist to the scams that are out there. Hartog urges you to use extreme caution in giving out your personal information when solicited by unknown callers.
